Bullen Family

Biographical history

William Fitzherbert Bullen (1857 - 1921), a former employee at Albion Iron Works in Victoria, established the British Columbia Marine Railway Company in Lang Cove at the eastern end of Esquimalt Harbour in 1893. He was the managing director of the firm which he sold to Sir Alfred Yarrow in 1914.

Scope and content

The photograph album includes thirty repair operations carried out by the Bullen yard 1906-1910. The postcard (ca. 1880) is of the officers of the HMS Swiftsure. The photographs are of Admiral Sir John E. Commerell (died 1901), First Naval V.C. Crimean War and of SS Princess Louise on the Fraser River, 1899. Also photographs of the first vessels repaired by Yarrows Ltd. (once Bullen's), Royal Navy Ships, and salvage vessels. Also a drawing (pencil or charcoal) of V.C. Admiral Commerell.
